Yesterday was Adolphe Sax’s birthday and as such was designated international Saxophone day.

Locally, Wight Saxes (local sax choir) and Wight Diamonds Marching Band hosted a Play day for over 30 sax players.

I was asked to lead the warm ups and the large ensemble pieces, but also my Sax quartet had their first outing. We started with Mr Sandman and then Sea Shanty.

There where solo performances from a few players and different groups showed of their talents too.

We where very lucky to have Gary Plumley join us to lead a jazz session. Gary plays with Sax Appeal and has recorded with multiple big names, such as the Average White Band.

Overall a really fun afternoon was had by one and all. Loads of pictures and videos taken (not by me) so hopefully I can add some of those when they come through.

The plan is to host another event next year, so watch this space for details.

many thanks to Andy and Lynn for organising.

I am looking forward to taking part in this event on Sunday. Its been organised by Wight Sax, which is the Islands saxophone choir and the Wight Diamonds Marching Band.

It involves ensemble playing, talks, solo and group performances and all levels are welcome.

My sax quartet (Those D.A.M.N Saxes,) are having their first outing here and playing a couple of numbers. I am also leading some of the ensemble playing.

Really interested to hear the talk by local Saxophonist Gary Plumley too.

Its going to be a good day, come and join us if you can.

I have been asked to run a saxophone workshop with a local ensemble called Wight Sax.  They are a community group who rehearse each week in Newport.  They have invited some members of the Trident Concert band to join us, and I’m really looking forward to meeting all theses saxophonists in one place.

We will cover sight reading and warm ups plus looking at one of their existing pieces plus other things, (but I don’t want to give it all away before the event,) during the evening, with the aim of offering advice and encouragement.

This is a closed event, but if it goes well, it will be something that I explore further, open to any player who cares to attend.

This should be a fun evening. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Dave
