Recently I have been doing some promotional work with Aspire Magazine based in Leicester.  This is a free magazine that covers the East Midlands that you can get in coffee shops and supermarkets, and is also available on line.

The advert on the left appeared in issue 400 and the editorial below, was in issue 401.

Wednesday afternoon saw me driving to the Belfry Hotel, part of the Belfry Golf resort near Sutton Coldfield.  This is a very swish venue with a Hotel, Conference Suite, Spa and 3 Golf courses.

The event was a pre-conference  drinks and dinner for a large nationwide law firm and they certainly picked a lovely day for it.

Music started at 6.30pm  in the bar for drinks and gathering before moving into the Woodlands Suite for a very nice 3 course meal.  Tunes ranged from Jazz standards, Michael Buble, The Beatles, Glen Miller, Van Morrison and lots of others.Woodlands Suite, The Belfry Hotel

I had a good chat with a very nice gentleman who played sax who was going to be playing at a friends party and just wanted some advice on tunes.

I finished playing at 9.15pm and handed over to the guest speaker and the rest of the evenings activities.

There were lots of positive comments and I have since received an enquiry about another event.

Well, for my dinner If I am going to be accurate.  On Wednesday I played for a senior citizens group belonging to my uncle’s church.

The dinner was held at the Leicester Stage Motel in Wigston and this is a very nice venue for functions and weddings plus the food was very good too.

We had a few classics like, fly me to the moon and  Christmas songs such as Santa baby  with some traditional Carols, and plenty of singing.

Both Carole and I had a great time and met some lovely people, including one of Caroles tutors from her time at college aged 17.

Thanks to Aunty Judy and Uncle  for inviting and feeding us, we had a great time.

If you have been reading my posts on here or cafe saxophone, you may have noticed that I played at my first wedding in June 2011.  Because of buying the amp etc to do that gig, I then tried busking which I love doing.  From the busking has come some more gigs, including 3 weddings and a golden anniversary wedding to play at.  I have also had enquiries for a funeral, retirement party and various village fund raisers.

As these gigs have all come about due to busking, and the weather at the moment is awful for that, I thought that I would get an on line presence to see if I can generate some more gigs.

I know I need to put some recordings up as examples, and hopefully on Tuesday I will be borrowing some recording equipment to get this done.  I have looked at other players sites to see what sort of tunes are good to know.  I have about 50 tunes so far and more in progress.

My main question is what do I call myself? eg wedding saxophonist?  I don’t want to limit myself to just weddings because of my description.  Any suggestions for name, tunes or ideas would be gratefully received.

regards

Dave
